Held at the National Squash Centre the competition featured 7 teams from a variety of companies including The Bank of New York Mellon, The E Word and Byrom PLC. The GM Workplace Games is a series of sporting competitions aimed at introducing people to new sports and getting the Greater Manchester workforce active.
The competition, organised in partnership with GreaterSport and the Big Hit, saw the teams split into two groups playing a round robin competition. Each of the 5 team members played their equivalent to gain as many points for their team as possible, teams were ranked after rounds to create a final and placing playoff matches.
Taking home the coveted trophy was the team from Abraham Moss Leisure Centre seeing off a team from England Squash & Racketball in the final. The third/fourth place playoff was won by Legion of Doom from BNY Mellon who played the Manchester Sports Development team in another tight contest. Rounding out the competition were Vamonos Pest (BNY Mellon), Byrom PLC and The E Word.
All teams received a goodie bag and England Squash & Racketball very kindly offered all competitors a free ticket to the National Squash Championships staged at the National Squash Centre at Sportcity in Manchester.
Craig Anthony from GreaterSport commented:
“The aim of the GM Workplace Games is to get people trying new sports, meeting new people and having a good time. England Squash & Racketball have made this evening a great introduction to the sport for people and I’m excited to see how this translates into more people playing squash.”
Chris Lengthorn from England Squash and Racketball commented:
“It’s great to see such a wide variety of workplaces out here taking part in Squash. The atmosphere was great and we have already taken several enquiries from new people wanting to give the sport another go or find a regular club to play at.”
