World Squash Day at Tame Valley

On Saturday 18th October, twenty members of Tame Valley Tennis & Squash Club took part in a handicap tournament to mark the occasion of World Squash Day.

The handicaps were designed to provide everyone with a chance as there was a wide range of abilities on show; everything from first team players to novice juniors.

Split in to four leagues of five, everyone played four games with the winners progressing to a semi-final knockout.

The juniors made a good account of themselves with 16 year old Emma Hall narrowly missing out on a semi final place, 11 year old Sam Coverley impressing with a fine debut and 14 year old Christian Maddox topping his league undefeated.

Indeed it was Christian who was the most impressive as, with his handicap of 4, he went on to defeat Jonathan Rice in the semi-final.

John Heston defeated Lee Coverley in the other semi-final to set up a final with Christian. John Heston eventually came out on top in a close game, but the members had seen enough of Christian to know that he’ll soon be beating all comers!

Nigel Young, the tournament organiser said: “It was a great day at the club. There was no trophy by the way, it’s just for fun! I'd like to thank everyone that helped organise the day and World Squash Day for their campaign. Of course I’d like to thank everyone that took part, especially the juniors as it's always nice to see so many keen young players on court! We will certainly be looking to reduce the handicaps of a few people next time! .”
